How Does The Christmas Story Fulfill Prophecy?

The birth of Jesus Christ, through the Biblical Christmas Story, fulfills numerous prophecies, including His virgin birth (Isaiah 7:14), His lineage from David (2 Samuel 7:12-16), and His birth in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2)​. Below are 10 prophecies the birth of Jesus fulfills.



How Does The Christmas Story Fulfill Prophecy?



The Messiah would be born of a woman

Prophecy: I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel. - Genesis 3:15


Fulfillment: Jesus who was born of Mary, fulfills this as the offspring who would defeat Satan (Matthew 1:20; Galatians 4:4).



The Messiah would be born in Bethlehem

Prophecy: But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days. -Micah 5:2


Fulfillment: Jesus is born in Bethlehem (Matthew 2:1; Luke 2:4-7).



The Messiah would be born of a virgin

Prophecy: Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. - Isaiah 7:14


Fulfillment: Mary, a young virgin, gives birth to Jesus, who is called Emmanuel (Matthew 1:22-23; Luke 1:26-31).



The Messiah would come from the lineage of Abraham

Prophecy: And in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice. - Genesis 22:18


Fulfillment: Jesus is recorded as a descendant of Abraham, fulfilling the promise (Matthew 1:1; Galatians 3:16).



The Messiah would come from the tribe of Judah

Prophecy: The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to him; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples. - Genesis 49:10


Fulfillment: Jesus is from the tribe of Judah (Luke 3:33; Revelation 5:5).



The Messiah would be a descendant of King David

Prophecy: When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.” - 2 Samuel 7:12; see also Jeremiah 23:5-6


Fulfillment: Jesus is the promised descendant of David (Matthew 1:1; Luke 1:32-33).



The Messiah’s birth would involve the slaughter of children

Prophecy: Thus says the Lord: ‘A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted for her children, because they are no more.’ - Jeremiah 31:15


Fulfillment: Herod orders the massacre of male children in Bethlehem (Matthew 2:16-18).



The Messiah’s birth would be announced by a star

Prophecy: I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near: a star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel; it shall crush the forehead of Moab and break down all the sons of Sheth. - Numbers 24:17


Fulfillment: The wise men follow a star to locate Jesus (Matthew 2:1-2, 9-10).



The Messiah would be worshiped by shepherds and kings

Prophecy: May the kings of Tarshish and of the coastlands render him tribute; may the kings of Sheba and Seba bring gifts! May all kings fall down before him, all nations serve him! - Psalm 72:10-11; see also Isaiah 60:1-6


Fulfillment: Shepherds visit Jesus at His birth, and wise men bring gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh (Luke 2:8-20; Matthew 2:1-11).



The Messiah’s family would flee to Egypt

Prophecy: When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son. - Hosea 11:1


Fulfillment: Jesus’ family flees to Egypt to escape Herod and later returns (Matthew 2:13-15).
